VMware released a new content pack for Log Insight, which caught my attention, as before I’ve only seen one blog post talking about how to use vCD with Log Insight by Anthony Spiteri
As a big fan and believer in vCloud Director potential (It’s the foundation of vCHS, and also many Service Providers in the world use it to offer Virtual Datacenters to their customers), I did give it a little test on my lab environment (very small env, 1 cell and a few vApps/VMs for my tests)
Here are what the default dashboards will provide you with:
Dashboard: Operational Overview
Dashboard: vApp Operations
Also note that you can launch the “Interactive Analysis” from most graphs, which is very useful to check something quickly.
Dashboard: Interactive analysis in a specific context (here it’s the vCNS error I spotted on the previous dashboard)
For example here, I was playing with the vShield Manager Service User permissions and roles on my vCenter Server around VIX. (I totally forgot about that one, but with the dashboard I could pinpoint it in a few seconds)
You can download the content pack here and of course it’s free :-)
Unfortunately today it doesn’t show anything related to vCloud Director networking which is a big piece of the puzzle and capabilities of vCloud Director, but I’m pretty sure with in the future with vCenter Operations NSX/vCNS Management Packs we could enhance this pretty easily.
PS: Note that there are some inconsistencies in my dashboards as I was before forwarding all logs using syslog-ng myself, and I also added yesterday the log4j settings. (you can see 2 times my vCD cell due to that)
